How Large Can You Print a 3840×2160 Image?

At 300 dpi a 3840x2160 PNG prints 12.8 by 7.2 inches. At 150 dpi it prints 25.6 by 14.4 inches. Larger needs a viewing distance.

At 300 dpi a 3840x2160 image prints 12.8 by 7.2 inches. At 150 dpi it prints 25.6 by 14.4 inches. At 200 dpi, a common poster-shop request, it prints 19.2 by 10.8 inches. Those three numbers cover almost every job these files should take. Larger than that is a viewing-distance decision, not a claim that the file "is 4K so it can be any size."

The formula is pixels divided by dpi equals inches. 3840 / 300 = 12.8. 2160 / 300 = 7.2. Flip it to plan a sheet: inches times dpi equals the pixels you need. An 11-inch-wide letter sheet at 300 dpi wants 3300 pixels. You have 3840. You are fine.

Inch sizes you can write on a spec

Use this table when a printer asks "what size is the file." Do not send them "it's 4K" and hope.

Paper sizes, mapped the honest way:

Bleed is not free pixels. A 3 mm bleed on A3 eats about 35 pixels at 300 dpi. You have spare width on A4 and Letter. You do not have spare height on a full-bleed 12.8 x 7.2 in sheet at 300 dpi. Either accept a small scale-down or pick a larger sheet at 240 dpi.

These files are 16:9. Almost no ISO sheet is 16:9. You will crop. Decide the crop in the layout, not at the printer RIP. Keep the master 3840x2160 PNG untouched in 02_original/ and export a flattened TIFF or PDF/X from InDesign with the crop and bleed already applied.

What the printer actually needs from you

Ask for three numbers: trim size, bleed, and required dpi at trim. Then do the math before you promise a wall. If they say "150 dpi at final size" and the wall is 3 metres wide, you need 17,716 pixels. You have 3840. That is a different image or a custom render. When a free still is enough is the decision page for that moment.

Color is a separate conversion. The PNG is an sRGB work file. A press wants Coated FOGRA39, GRACoL 2013, or whatever the house profile is. Convert in Photoshop or the layout app; do not assign a CMYK profile without converting. The color-space page covers that hand-off.

Sharpness: a grid or HUD plate with 1-pixel lines will show stair-steps if you upscale. Do not upscale these files for print. Crop or accept a lower dpi. A gradient plate upscales less badly, but banding becomes the new problem.

Viewing distance buys you dpi. A 150 dpi panel at arm's length looks crunchy. The same panel across a booth aisle looks fine. If people will hold the piece, stay at 240 to 300 dpi and the 12.8 x 7.2 in class. If they will walk past it, 150 dpi at 25.6 x 14.4 in is the honest ceiling for this resolution.

Send the printer a PDF/X-4 or a TIFF, not the live PNG from the archive, unless they explicitly accept RGB PNG. Name the print export with trim and dpi: acme-panel-25p6x14p4in-150dpi-fogra39.tif. Leave slug-3840x2160-srgb.png in the job folder as the source.

3840x2160 has a hard inch budget

300 dpi is a large postcard. 150 dpi is a small poster. A 24x36 wall is past the file.
