How Do You Place a 4K PNG into PowerPoint or Keynote Without Blur?
Insert the 3840x2160 PNG from disk, turn off picture compression, and use Fill on a 13.333 by 7.5 inch 16:9 slide.
Insert the 3840x2160 PNG from disk. Do not paste the 1920-pixel preview from the browser. On a standard widescreen slide of 13.333 by 7.5 inches, those 3840 pixels land at about 288 ppi, which is more than enough for a projector, a PDF handout or a 4K presenter's display. Blur almost always means you inserted the wrong file, let the app compress pictures, or used Fit when you needed Fill.
Slide size, pixels and the 288 ppi number
PowerPoint and Keynote do not think in pixels first. They think in inches on a slide, then sample the picture to match. Widescreen 16:9 is 13.333 in wide and 7.5 in tall. Divide 3840 by 13.333 and you get roughly 288 ppi. Divide 2160 by 7.5 and you get 288 ppi again. The file is a 1:1 match for the slide's aspect ratio, so nothing has to stretch.
Other slide sizes change the math:
- On-screen 4:3 at 10 by 7.5 in uses only 2160 of the 2160 vertical pixels if you Fill, and crops the sides. Effective ppi stays 288 on the short side.
- A custom 13.333 by 7.5 in deck that someone later scaled to 16.535 by 9.301 in (A4 landscape-ish) still has enough pixels for 232 ppi. Fine for print-to-PDF.
- A title-safe 1920x1080 export from the deck does not need more than 144 ppi on that 13.333-inch width. The 4K master is overhead, and that is useful.
What is not enough is the site preview. The public preview is 1920 px wide. On the same 13.333-inch slide that is 144 ppi, which looks acceptable on a laptop and soft on a 100-inch throw. People call that "the PNG is blurry." It is not. They inserted a browse file.
Download the master from the archive. Keep it in library/3840x2160-srgb/. Insert that path. If you need a smaller working copy for a laptop that chokes on 12 MB pictures, make a 2560-px-wide PNG yourself and label it working, never original.
Insert, Fill, Fit, and the compression trap
In PowerPoint use Insert > Pictures > This Device. In Keynote use Media > Choose. Dragging from a browser tab often drops the preview or a transcoded JPEG.
Set the picture to Fill the slide if it is a full-bleed background. Fill scales uniformly and crops overflow. Fit scales uniformly and letterboxes. A 16:9 PNG on a 16:9 slide should Fill and crop nothing. If you see bars, the slide size is not 16:9. Fix the slide, do not stretch the picture.
Then kill compression:
- PowerPoint: File > Options > Advanced > Image Size and Quality. Check "Do not compress images in file." Set default resolution to High fidelity if you still want a safety net. On Mac the same idea lives under PowerPoint > Preferences > General and under File > Compress Pictures, which you should not run.
- Compress Pictures with "Delete cropped areas" permanently destroys the 4K master inside the deck. Never do that to the only copy.
- Keynote: after you set an Image Fill on the slide background, leave "Scale to Fill" on. Do not reduce the file through an export-to-images step and then reimport.
Lock a copy of the PNG outside the deck. Decks get emailed, cloned and "optimized" by people who never opened this page. The master in the job folder is how you recover.
Type on a dark plate from the presentation or dark tags. A busy neon tunnel will fight 18 pt body copy. If you must use a busy plate, add a 40 to 60 percent black rectangle at 80 percent width, or slide the picture down so the vanishing point sits under the title. That is layout, not a sharpness problem.
Export checks: File > Export > PDF at "Best" or "High quality." If the PDF looks soft, open it at 100 percent, not fit-to-window. Fit-to-window samples the page for your monitor and lies. If it is still soft, you inserted the 1920 preview or ran Compress Pictures. Reinsert the master.
Google Slides is a worse host for a 12 MB PNG. It will resample on upload. For Slides, pre-export a 2560x1440 sRGB JPEG at quality 90 and accept that the deck is a presentation copy, not an archive.
If you later need a web hero from the same plate, that is a different conversion. Do not export the slide as a screenshot and call it the website asset.
Blur is usually the wrong file or a compress pass
A native 3840x2160 PNG on a 16:9 slide is 288 ppi. The 1920 preview is 144 ppi.
16:9 on 16:9 should Fill with no bars. Bars mean the slide size is wrong.
Turn off PowerPoint picture compression. Do not delete cropped areas.
The deck is not the archive. Store slug-3840x2160-srgb.png outside the PPTX.
